Making Ubuntu 7.10 / Ubuntu Studio Useful

Ubuntu 7.10 is an amazing thing. But they can't do some things "legally". But you can... if you don't mind having things on your computer you theoretically should not have.

Let's start with the basics that are legal, but "not free open source programs" and then add the Microsoft specific codecs for some DVD and other media playback and lets do this all as root, type 'sudo -s' and become root. It saves some typing. and if you mess up you can always re-install.

If you feel lucky, cut and paste this into a file and run it as root:
apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
echo deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ gutsy free non-free >>/etc/apt/sources.list
wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | apt-key add -
apt-get update
apt-get install libdvdcss2
apt-get install w32codecs

Personal Bandwidth

In talking with the current generation of biz-dev people, they use the word "bandwidth" in all of the wrong ways, yet it makes sense in weird ways and "sticks". I've been asked a lot lately about available "personal bandwidth" and am considering increasing it in two or more ways. One is actually "working" in productive mode for more than the 30 hours or so a week I do now. The other is hiring some talented programmers that live with the same tools as I do: PHP/MySQL on Linux mostly. Not sure how it's all going to work out, and I'm still working on some goals more elaborate than: make some serious money for a while.

It's part of a convergence that I see happening in my personal world, one of available paying projects and available talented people.
As I told Nancy last week, I'm out treading water with my surfboard, I see a wave starting to form... do I ride it?

Zaurus Files Reborn

As I monitor my servers logs, seems a lot of people are searching for my collection of files for the Sharp Zaurus. I'll look for the detailed instructions, as I don't remember the details, but the basics are, put all of these Sharp Zaurus OS and Applications on a flash card and install the OS, and then go install all of the programs. The only magic here is that it's a matched working set of the OS and applications in one place.
